It's always interesting to serve with Dr. Bob. "Kathy, what would you do if Jeff came home and told you he wanted to leave you for another woman?" An unscripted question that he asked in the midst of Core Class 201. Bob is crazy fun!
Bob's point was to talk about how spiritual maturity is directly related to our assessment of self-worth. Why do we believe we matter?
I matter because God decided I am worth the death of Jesus. My worth doesn't come from Jeff, my kids, my job, my finances, my parents, or my past. I haven't always known that. I lived for many years thinking it was all about me: my desires, my pain, my control. For me to live a life that honors God, I have to keep that understanding alive and fresh...every single morning. I encourage others to do the same.
Lamentations 3:19-24 (Message): I'll never forget the trouble, the utter lostness, the taste of ashes, the poison I've swallowed. I remember it all-oh, how well I remember-the feeling of hitting the bottom. But there's one other thing I remember, and remembering, I keep a grip on hope: God's loyal love couldn't have run out, his merciful love couldn't have dried up. They're created new every morning. How great is your faithfulness! I'm sticking with God (I say it over and over). He's all I've got left.
This is something I've been processing even more lately. As part of this church plant, my role is evolving, I'm hearing reactions from friends, and I have really had to sort out my worth and identity in Christ. There is so much more security when we are not relying on outside "stuff". And I'm right there with you--reminding myself every day...and with every comment I hear...and with every step of this journey!
Thanks for encouraging!!!

Great post! This is the key to our daily walk with Jesus. Being in ministry, it is very easy to forget that we are worshippers first; "employees" second.
