After we've been doing something for a while, it is easy to drift from our purpose of why we do what we do. Sometimes, we even forget the purpose.
I had a meeting a few days a go with a volunteer team to decide their future; since it wasn't providing a positive volunteer experience for the leadership team, keeping things the same wasn't an option. The options were to change it or end it.
After a quick journey through what wasn't working, but before looking for solutions, we stopped to consider if the actions of this team were supporting our primary purpose as an organization. Did it add value or was it just nice? (While there are plenty of God-honoring activities that we could adopt, we won't provide a pathway for all of them to be accomplished. Choose the ones that advance your purpose.)
When a new child is born, this team celebrates the birth by providing and delivering a meal to the family. Their purpose is not to be a meal delivery service. Their purpose is to tell this family that they matter to God. They will do that through serving them.
With clear vision, problem solving becomes much easier. The leadership team left with renewed energy to serve. They understand their significance in the purpose and were included in the process.
Vision leaks. Define it. Repeat it ...often.
